Professor Wei Shaojun of Tsinghua University talks about the development of China's semiconduct

On August 17, Wei Shaojun, chairman of IC Design Branch of China Semiconductor Industry Association and professor at the School of Integrated Circuits of Tsinghua University, shared his thoughts on China's semiconductor industry for 20 years. After decades of development, China has become an emerging country in the integrated circuit industry, and has built several integrated circuit industry centers in the Beijing-Tianjin Bohai Rim, the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta and the central and western regions, forming a number of distinctive integrated circuits. circuit industry. China's integrated circuit industry is one of the few industries in the world that has five complete sectors: design, manufacturing, packaging and testing, equipment and materials. In the segmented field, many companies have rushed into the top ten in the corresponding field, including the once-missing semiconductor memory is also gradually rising. According to Wei Shaojun, in 2021, the three links of design, manufacturing and packaging and testing will be superimposed, and the revenue of China's integrated circuit industry will exceed 1 trillion yuan for the first time, reaching 1,045.8 billion yuan, an increase of 18.2%. In recent years, the design industry has been one of the fastest growing areas of the integrated circuit industry. Since 2004, the average annual compound growth rate of the design industry has reached 26.6%, becoming an important locomotive for the development of my country's integrated circuit industry. At the same time, the manufacturing industry has sprung up in recent years. Although the scale is not large enough, it has surpassed the packaging and testing industry and has become an important backbone of China's integrated circuit industry. Now, China's integrated circuit industry has formed an industrial sequence of design, manufacturing, packaging and testing, and the industrial structure is becoming more and more reasonable. As the largest single semiconductor market and the largest chip importer, China is constantly improving its product competitiveness. From less than 5% of the world in 2004, by 2021, the global share of Chinese products will increase to 12.5%, especially in the field of high-end general-purpose chips, the market share is increasing. Semiconductor is an industry that requires long-term investment, and it is also an industry that requires long-term persistence and continuous efforts. China is at a very favorable stage of development and is engaged in industrial upgrading. The shift from low added value to high added value, from low technology to high technology, from low productivity to high productivity, and from the low end of the industrial chain to the high end, so this is in line with the basic characteristics of human development. So we should have determination and confidence that we can do this work well. Wei Shaojun said that China's status as the world's factory will not change in the short term, which also creates important conditions for the development of semiconductors. However, Wei Shaojun also pointed out that although China's development is rapid, there are also problems. For example, domestic industries have long been deployed around manufacturing, but should now move to a product-centric industry model. At present, due to the limitation of scale, specification and profitability, domestic enterprises are actually still very weak in innovation ability, and other methods need to be adopted to promote the improvement of innovation ability. In addition, Wei Shaojun also said that he should focus on training the longboard. The fifth-generation communication and mobile field is one of China's dominant industries, and it also indicates an important driving force for future development. We must focus on giving full play to our advantages and superimposing 5G applications.
